Camera basics

Traffic camera vs. red-light enforcement camera

A visible camera near a road or intersection does not automatically mean automated red-light enforcement is taking place.

Traffic-monitoring cameras

Road agencies may use cameras or sensors for traffic flow, signal timing, incident response, roadway operations or other monitoring purposes. Those systems are not necessarily used to issue violations.

Enforcement cameras

Automated red-light enforcement programs generally depend on specific equipment, legal authority, program rules and local implementation. Those programs can change over time.

Why verification matters

Simply collecting every camera-looking object on a map can create misleading alerts. Redlight Traffic Cam Alert is being designed around a database intended to identify verified enforcement locations while clearly acknowledging when current verified information is unavailable.
